It’s been two decades since MJ was on his way to his 5th championship when Tinker Hatfield had the Black Cat in mind as an inspiration in designing Michael’s 13th signature shoe. “I pulled out this big sheet of paper with all these drawings and photographs on it and I started talking about how the way he moved reminded me of a big, powerful, predatory cat. In the images, I used a black leopard”, Tinker explained how his presentation to MJ went in an interview conducted by Oyster Magazine. After barely getting into it, Tinker was asked how he knew. Only his closest friends when he was younger used to call him Black Cat and the designer being able to connect with MJ that way was just a true testament to the relationship they have. They defined how a relationship between an athlete and a designer to be like.

Fast forward to when the actual design came to life, the Air Jordan 13 was seen in various colorways by the end of the ’97-’98 regular season, but it wasn’t until the Playoffs that the Bred colorway made its debut, which MJ wore in every road game from the first round until the conference Finals.

The Air Jordan 13 Retro ‘Bred’ releases on August 19 in store and on WWW.TITAN22.COM. Stay tuned to @titan_22 on Instagram and Titan 22 Basketball on Facebook for news and updates on its release.
